Ajna Kick Rough Test Animation by TheGraffitiSoul Ajna Kick Rough Test Animation by TheGraffitiSoul
Well, Lab Zero have officially concluded their search for their contract animators and I was unable to complete the tests for before the Wednesday deadline. I did manage to finish a rough of Ajna's kick. I'll keep working on this though just because it's such good practice for how I would want to animate Jet eventually. First things first, I gotta fix that weird shit happening with her ear and jawline.

Oh yeah, people who want to work for animation have to be given tests first before they actually hire them. I remember this in my animation class.

This is looking good so far. I know it's a WIP and you might fix some stuff, but my suggestions for changes would be to add some anticipation before she actually starts the kick, her foot that is on the ground should probably hop a little instead of just rotating, her leg doesn't feel like it has a SNAP to it (Probably the pose before it should still be bent and maybe add some overshoot for when the leg does kick), and the trailing part of the sash and the tassel don't appear to move naturally (as in it doesn't move like cloth).

Though I know it's pointless now since they already hired animators, it's nice to see that this animation will be worked on still. ^^

This particular test had a set of guidelines. They wanted 5 frames from the idle pose to the kick then 6 frames from 6 to idle while holding drawings within 3 frames at most so I couldn't really do any frames for anticipation. I couldn't really do a hop kick either because that would require a different set of key frames, what they provided was a standing kick. The tassel and the beads definitely need fixing as well as the frames from idle to kick. As for the sash, I really need to figure it out because the sash on the kick frame they provided appears much smaller than the sash on the idle pose.

Hm. I see. So these guidelines have limited you. Well, at least you did your best with what you have. ^^

I was also going to point out the sash's size, but yeah it does seem smaller when Ajna does the actual kick. I wonder if it's foreshortening messing it up.

I did look at the kick animation from the current demo. The animation itself is a spinning back kick but it uses the exact same idle and kick key frames and the amount of frames seem match the guidelines but the change to the sashes size seems to work for it. Maybe the drastic change in the position of the body makes the size change unnoticeable. Perhaps I can make the sash's movement from idle to kick more natural if I added some S curves into one of the frames like I did from kick to idle.

Perhaps that could work. Maybe the sash can also flow inward instead of outward too when she finishes the kick and is moving back to idle.

The flow from kick to idle is going inward. I followed the same shapes from the demo animation. What I could do is add a drawing directly from kick to idle and hold it for one frame and change the frame next to it from a 2 to a 1 so it looks smoother.

Ohhh. Yeah, maybe some more reference from the actual animation would be good to use.

Lab Zero was looking for a contract animator to work on their game so they gave out a couple of animation tests. I picked up this kick test just for practice.

Wow! Lab Zero is the same studio that made "Skullgirls"!
So your shooting to be an animator, nice!

I'm already working at a studio so I didn't have time to clean this up before their deadline.

Well first, CONGRATS!!! I glad you got the job!
And 2. Will it be ok even if you didn't clean it before the deadline?

Oh, I'm not working for Lab Zero. I'm working at a different studio. Lab Zero already filled their contract animator position.
